Bernadine "Birdie" Pruessner
February 14, 2024 - Ferguson, MO
Age 39
Birdie died by apparent suicide after allegedly setting fire to her home, killing her 4 children. She had been in prolonged custody disputes with her two exes. Birdie’s death was ruled a murder-suicide.
Birdie’s family made this statement through her attorney in the custody litigation “Each day that Birdie would score a step forward, her ex-husband and or her former boyfriend would undertake an action to denigrate or undermine her role as a mother. Her ex-husband and former boyfriend were well funded by their incomes and assets and demonstrated a No Holds Barred when it came to attacking our daughter Birdie... The family believes that Birdie would never have gotten to this place without the unending attacks on her by her ex-husband and her boyfriend.”

Birdie was in family court for two years 2016-2018, including a motion for a restraining order and assigning child’s counsel and a GALs. Then another case from 2018-2023. She was concurrently in a case with her prior Ex-boyfriend for paternity and child support in 2021-2022. But the most disturbing case was from 2023-2024 where Birdie and her children were raked through the family court so extremely she must have felt so desperate and beaten down. All case details are public records from Missouri Courts.
A Go Fund Me has been set up by her family.
Note, on the rare occasions* when a mother has committed a murder-suicide during separation/divorce, such as in this case, we can only assume that it was an act of utter desperation after enduring unbearable conditions that she, and her children, were exposed to in the home and the family court system. WeSpoke does not condone such acts of violence and whilst there is no excuse to take a human life, it is important to include these women as ‘mothers lost’ to the system and men’s control.
* Of the 1,000 children who were murdered by a divorcing/separating parent in the U.S., the killer was 70% Father, 18% Mother, 13% Other. For more statistics and data on children murdered by a separating/divorcing parent, visit Center for Judicial Excellence
